Breathing. It’s the most fundamental of all bodily functions. Without air, we don’t survive for very long. It occurs without conscious effort, and yet, adapts like a speedily increasing heart rate, to changing circumstances. Unlike our heart rates however, we are able to modify our breathing rate to suit our needs and desires. That’s great when we are making a conscious effort to breathe more deeply than average. But what about the rest of the time?

 

Most of us don’t spend much time thinking about breathing. Work, bills, kids, and life can get in the way of focusing on this most personal of endeavors. And that’s easy to understand – as we sit at a desk, there isn’t an apparent deep bodily need for a lot of extra oxygen. But at the same time, flooding our bodies with extra air creates a sense of wakefulness. It can perk one right up at the time that afternoon drowsiness begins to settle in. Breathing deeply expands the ribcage and stimulates bloodflow around the vital organs.

 

Unlike stretching, which provides some of the same benefits, breathwork can be done anywhere. It doesn’t require floor space and a mat. But it does require that you remember to do it, because if you’re not exercising quite vigorously, it can be hard to remember to modify your automatic functions. But the benefits, which also include stress reduction and increased mental acuity, make this an ideal addition to your daily routine. Be sure to take the personal time to breathe deeply a half dozen times each day. In short order, this healthy practice will become habit.

Hoodia is a cactus-looking plant (but not a cactus) found in South Africa. The component of Hoodia that is popular for its weight loss benefits is loosely known as the P-57 molecule.

Does Hoodia even work?

Many people claim it does. Only a handful of studies on P-57 seem to have been done on the subject, and for both rats and humans, it does seem to increase energy and suppress appetite.

Does it have side effects?

The handful of studies claim there are no side effects. Doctor oriented websites generally label it as “insufficient evidence.” Dr. Michael Steelman, a diet specialist, recommends talking to your doctor before beginning a hoodia regime.

The Scoop About the Patent

Phytopharm had leased from South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) the exclusive patent to extract and manufacture P-57 from 1995 to the end of 2010. During that time, they partnered with Pfizer from 1998 to 2003 to further research and develop P-57 as a weight loss supplement. From 2004 to 2008, they partnered with Unilever for the same purpose. Rumor is Unilever pulled out the deal because P-57 metabolized too quickly when drank as a liquid in their Slim Fast shakes, but the public relations answer was that P-57 didn’t live up to their standards. In December, 2010, Phytopharm released the patent back to the CSIR in a joint venture to research and develop P-57 as a weight loss supplement focusing on solid forms.

Things to Consider With Hoodia

Many Hoodia products are available in a pill form. Some are solely Hoodia while others include other ingredients such as Vitamin B, Caffeine, and Ginseng. Some products are scams using parts of the Hoodia plant that do not contribute to weight loss. You still have to eat a healthy diet, battle over-eating, and exercise regularly for Hoodia to work.

You may think that the way you breathe and when you breathe are not important. You would be wrong. The practices of activities like yoga and Tai Chi where developed with breathing in mind. To correctly complete the cycle of excerises, breathing should be an important part of the practice.

Breathwork is an generic term for specific breathing excerises. The breathwork done during these excerises is something that you concentrate on and is deliberate. You intentionally alter your breathing pattern to gain healing and mind expanding benefits.

Is Health Medicine for Me?

The words ‘health medicine’ have taken on a somewhat bad concotation durning the past century or so. The reason for the bad feeling about health medicine may have stemmed from the fact that natutral cures have lately been considered obsolete. Antibiotics started to replace old remedies and natural cures began to be viewed as inactive or inferior. Of course, it did not help that many natural healers were labled as witches and burned at the stake. With all the bad publicity it is really difficult to see what health medicine really is.

1 – Drink water. LOTS of water.

In fact, a lack of water intake has been shown to lead to dehydration and allow fat deposits to actually increase. Eight glasses of water a day can do much to keep the fat off and keep energy levels up.

2 – Don’t eat late at night
It’s easy to get the munchies late at night. The problem is that late-night binging not only throws weight loss programs into utter chaos, it puts food in the system during sleep time when less energy is being expended¬¬––a proven recipe for weight gain. Get into a regular routine by eating healthy, low-cal meals throughout the day to make sure you have the energy you need, but cut off eating after 8 or 9 p.m. If nothing more, this habit will help control overall caloric intake.

3 – Walk more, drive less
It may be impossible for some, but take advantage of any chance to walk whenever possible. Maintaining weight loss is always about burning as many calories as possible, and walking is a fun, easy way to make that happen. Even a few minutes of brisk walking every day will do much to speed up your metabolism and burn calories, especially after meals. History of Breathwork

History forever defines the present – modern theories are but mimics of the past, stealing ideas from philosophies that were once bold. The foundations are offered and genius (however borrowed) is formed upon them. Such is the truth of all concepts. Ideas are no longer noted for their originality but instead of how they reshape their predecessors. And breathwork is no different. Though now often considered a simple exercise, it was once intended to provide spiritual clarity. Its origins were defined to the pursuit of relief for both body and soul. And such a purpose should be explored to understand its relevance and its effect upon all.

There is no certain year for the beginnings of breathwork. While it’s known to be part of the ancient art of Pranayama (which was established within India, promoting the achievement of satisfaction through control of the mind and skin), its precise formation is merely estimated – often believed to be between 1200 and 1500 BC. Despite that admittedly large gap, the intention of breathwork is still recognized by scholars: to discover the rewards of deliberate inhalations, which would lead to transcendent experiences.

Such experiences were described often through the centuries, with Eastern individuals adhering to them diligently. Such practices as Tibetan Tantric Tummo, Tai Chi and Qigong strongly supported this process and its values. Followers were meant to learn of their own potential through the use of breathing. It became an influence keenly felt throughout the Eurasian countries – and that influence eventually sprawled across the sea and settled in America.

During the 1970’s, there was a blossoming of breathwork practices within the United States. While these lacked the religious elements of the past, they did retain still the notion of conquering the body through careful exercise. They became physiological processes, used to combat the many flares of panic and concern.

The purpose changed but the results didn’t. Breathwork succeeded as it always had, and it still does.
